"The Improbability Principle: Why Coincidences, Miracles, and Rare Events Happen Every Day."

Ah, he'll be able to explain my experience then...

...however I do think David Hand's talk is a good reason for considering the validity of research like the Global Consciousness Project.

Why would the "broadcast" come specifically to you? Do you think that the people who ransacked the house were friends who knew you?

I don't know, it remains a bit of a mystery... certainly if it [the broadcaster] was somebody who knew me, it might be easier to explain. Instead, I'm left to consider changes in adolescent brain development, and the sudden changes in spatial patterns created by physical structures in the brain (like those little green things in my Avatar).

Jay Giedd's work on childhood brain development is very interesting, particularly his longitudinal studies, where he shows substantial non-linear grey matter changes in brain development peaking at around age 12 for the frontal and parietal lobes, 16 for the temporal lobe, and grey matter continuing to increase in the occipital lobe through to age 20.

"If these increases are related to a second wave of overproduction of synapses, it may herald a critical stage of development when the environment or activities of the teenager may guide selective synapse elimination during adolescence. The relative prominence of the role of the environment in shaping late synaptogenesis is supported by rat studies"

The part I'm interested in, is the idea of periods in a child's brain development where there are massive peaks of over-production of synapses. A bit like a sculptor being given a raw block of stone, and then carving away a block of stone to reveal a pattern. In much the same way, the sudden over production of new structures in the child's brain are eliminated over time - if they remain unused.

What happens at the peak periods of over-production of these structures...? I'm suggesting that these peaks in over production, may be partly responsible for increased reports of odd phenomena which seem centered around children of similar ages.

So do you think that people all over the world received that same "broadcast" at the same time as you did?

Can you use your broadcast model and the specific event that you wrote about on the blog and explain how your model might work? Do you think that another consciousness had to be viewing the house at the same time as you had the communication?

My thinking since I wrote that article on my blog has changed, so I don't think a 'broadcast' really fits very well with my ideas anymore. Although I do think another consciousness was probably viewing the house at the same time I had my experience. I am trying to build a theory, whether I actually ever finish it remains to be seen... lol...

The podcast is great, worth a listen....but yeah, the coincidences Hand talks about seem to largely focus around picking at low hanging fruit rather than anything I'd consider miraculous.

My sister did her MS in a mathematical/staistical field (operations research). I actually was talking to her about this book a few days ago. and we both agreed what Hand is talking about doesn't always explain the incredible timing of synchronicity.

Look at the scarab story of Jung's. That could just be perfect chance, but I see no reason to accept that as definite.

Yes I agree... and I will also say from a much wider frame of reference, that all Hand may be doing is describing our perceptions and experiences from a certain perspective, a perfectly valid perspective, but one which may in time, turn out to be not the best way of understanding them.

That's a good way to think about it. Pinchbeck has tallked about the actual and Imaginal realms, how it may be better to think of these as separate but integrated planes of existence in some sense.

Also the woman who was struck by lightning but didn't go to the hospital seemed foolhardy to me and I wished the hosts had called her out on it politely. If you are struck by lightning it seems to me you should go to the hospital in case there is internal bleeding or other injuries that may not at first be evident.

I listened to the woman who alleged she was struck by lightning... and decided she was deluded... lol
