Mod+ 257. DR. DIANE POWELL FINDS TELEPATHY AMONG AUTISTIC SAVANT CHILDREN

So what are the options then? Powell is a fraud or epically credulous?

I don't really know what her agenda is, if she even has one. But why even go into that sort of situation these days without even taking some video, even if not completely controlled. It would have been easy enough to do. She could have EASILY taken some video of this. A lot of things just don't make sense. I watched one of Ramses videos and there is a point at the end of the video that looks like there was pre-planned cueing going on. Mom seems to be doing alot to promote this kid which is suspect.

I watched all the videos as well and I find the whole thing a bit unsettling. First off, most videos start with Ramses sitting in front of something that's already been drawn, like an algebra graph, while the mother states "Here's Ramses doing advanced Algebra!". Then nothing happens. In one video she has him sitting in front of some clearly advanced paintings with a paint brush on the canvas as if he's the artist. But again, he's not actually doing anything. If one thing is abundantly clear the mother is exploiting this kid in the worst ways possible, even going as far as to name the channel "Genius Ramses". I have no doubts that this kid may be hyper intelligent but the mother's disposition is disturbing.

Of course all of this leads back to Powell. If the mother is a fraud then it still doesn't gel with Powell's reports, which again include Ramses reading her mind.

She's doing herself a disservice by making all these claims and having no documentation. I mean come on.

I agree that's it's a disservice, but it's also more than that. It actually just doesn't make any sense. There are only a couple possibilities given what we're seeing and what Powell is reporting.

1. Ram is the real deal and this could mean a huge breakthrough for Powell. If real his abilities are off the charts. For some reason she didn't film any of her multiple experiments, but from looking at the YT channel it's clear that he is filmed and presented publicly without issue and displays a staggering ability with relative ease. We can only speculate as to why she wouldn't want to film and/or share more than her preliminary report.

2. The mother is faking it for any number of dubious reasons, and Powell is either in on it or extremely oblivious. However one has to wonder how oblivious could Powell be to believe that the child is reading her mind? That's just bizarre. If Powell is sincere in her efforts and the mother is faking it then it does not paint a good picture.

So we can certainly assume where Chopra and Sheldrake stand on the matter if they are financially supportive of Powell.

It sounds like she was controlling the 'hangman' test was she not? This would rule out her being oblivious. Prop your cell phone on the counter and record it. Come on.

So given the fact that we have little to go on let's be optimists and roll with option 1. Maybe this is the one she's been looking for.

I'm a realist, not an optimist and I don't think this is real. This would have been VERY easy to document on video by now.

Lol. I would like to be but I'm not sure this situation merits that.

I'm going to 180 on this. After some research on this woman and her son I have come to the conclusion that she may be endangering her child. She obsessively campaigns across all the major media channels for her child's genius with pictures and videos, none of which show any convincing demonstration of anything let alone telepathic ability. It would be bad enough if the child has real abilities, but then at least it would be bringing attention to a gifted child. The mixture of fanatic postings of her "genius" son everywhere all over the internet along with the fact that none of them actually clearly show any of the purported skills that he has paints a picture of a sick woman who needs help before she gives her son serious psychological damage. I hate to say it but Diane Powell must be mad to walk into this situation.

she may very well be

That Ramses kid/mother are not genuine. That lady is a fraud. As far as Dr. Powell's research goes, Haley could have been properly tested with a fairly small budget and results should be cut and dry if done right. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the asking of nearly a half million for this.

Eh? Where is the evidence for the accusation? Some links, maybe?

There is no proof on Powell being a fraud. That is all opinion and very premature at that.

The burden of proof is always on the claimant. One way or the other. Until there is proof, the only scientific stance is to abstain from drawing a conclusion.

I for one am looking forward to reading the research papers next year, when they finally, hopefully will be done and published.

I have done and actually published peer-review myself, so I know how boring, slow, cumbersome and yes, expensive it can be. And there are always haters and armchair critics who haven't been there, haven't done the work, haven't read the papers, haven't gone to the conferences, haven't exposed their own work to actual experimental testing, but are just shooting off-the-hip some basic ideas, which to most parapsychology researchers are so basic controls that they don't even bother to mention them anymore.

Drawing conclusions based on youtube videos, own guesses and forum comments may be fun, but scientific it is not.

Big Kudos to Powell for taking the time to coming here , knowing full well that the auto-skepticism and hating would ensue.

And people wonder why so many researchers actually want to withdraw from the publicity and actually use their time to do actual research. All of this commenting and having to fight for crumbs of funding may be a part of doing research these days, but for most it doesn't really advance the research at all.

But hey, for us, it's good entertainment :-D

This is a great post. Thanks. I worry though that you may have misread some things. For one, you may be mistaking genuine consternation with Powell's choice of a test subject for hatred, bigotry, or armchair skepticism. I personally want Powell to succeed bigtime and I applaud her efforts. But it's hard to see how anyone who has actually taken the time to dig into the very public world of Genius Ramses will not be left scratching their head. Have you taken the time to do this? If you have no interest, that's fine. But then it seems like you're jumping to conclusions about motive and intent on the part of posters here.

Also I'm hoping that we agree that people are free to speak their opinions no matter where they stand on a topic.

Bishop, I was not referring to you or anybody in particular. I just noted that the was , what I felt as "letting out steam" and demands and requirements as to what somebody else should do with their research. I got this a lot when I did mine, my standard reply was: "That's a great idea! Why don't you do that research yourself?" I never got any takers...

Re: Ramses. It is difficult to say based on the youtube videos. I have seen no published papers on her and afaik, they don't yet exist. To me the videos prove very little. One way or the other. For telepathy, mind-reading, guessing, super-psi or anything else in the para realm they are not proof (the reasons, as you stated, are obvious). However, they are enough - for some- to warrant potential interest to do further research, if one is so inclined. I don't take the enthusiasm of the poster of the videos as proof of fraud or any such claims. Possible, not proven. Actual research is required to do this.

I fully agree on the issue of letting out opinions and let all flowers blossom. That's why I'm voicing mine.

One thing I try to remind myself and remember from my days is that researchers are human too. They have emotions. They might get hurt. They second-guess and doubt themselves. They make mistakes (yes, even Einstein and Feynman). So, attacking them personally, for example calling them "frauds" is nothing more than a personal attack, often trying to leverage power over another being. It does not further truth or research - even less so when these outbursts are based on no evidence, but merely outcomes of personal emotions. That's why the debunker-skeptic forums (ala Randi) are such a bore. They repeat the same ad hominem formulae ad infinitum. And that's why I hope skeptiko won't start to slide on the same slope towards group-think and remains civil.

And at the point when they go to the level of "you should do this, do that", I think it's bordering on silly. But yes, everybody is entitled and I cannot know that something good and practical may not arise from that. Who knows - the universe is a mystery :)

Won't have much disagreement from me on this! Great post.

Ramses is a little boy though. :)

I'll do it. Where do you suggest I get started? After my research I will come back here and fight you with a counterpoint. Now toss me a link or something, bishtch.

Eta. Or I can finish the eyes project. It's your call.
