just a boy in the world again

... my avatar pic is from one of the few sort of level spots on the climb 10 of us made up to a remote location of The Great Wall, north of Beijing in China. In this picture I'm not actually on the level spot, I'm still holding on, and this entire trip was a steep steep climb, apparently 4 people (average) die every year taking this route, and you simply can not slip or fall, there isn't anything to catch you if you do for a long way. "Yeah, just don't look down" was heard from several of us during the long climb. The partial shadow cast over me is the girl me and another guy helped up, almost all the way up. She was thin, however she was a "model" type, and not into gymnastics or other sporting type activities, and so she had little muscle definition or physical strengths. We had to, me and this other guy, take her hand and pull it from one shrub or rock hand hold to the next, and on this one I helped her up last and then leaned up against the side of the hill, and she stood on the flat spot and turned around and took a picture of me, and the wall we could see off in the distance, and the horizon ... and during this whole climb none of us could see our target, where we were going to the wall, all we could see was the wall in the distance meandering away from us.

When we finally crested the last climb, it was all flat, and we were at the wall, it was right there, a big square building on a junction, and this junction was the highest point on the wall for miles and miles and miles around! It was spectacular, to all of us, we could not see any point on it that was higher than this point, and we could see many miles of it, a hundred mile view.

Spectacular, we all brought nap-sacks with food and other things, and had lunch up there and hung out for a while, and then the trip back was on the regular trail most commonly used at this location. It was still very steep, and it wound back and forth across that side of the hill to avoid the steepness of the whole location, but it was a cake walk compared to the way we came in.

5 guys, 5 girls, most of us relative strangers to each other, and this trip just kind of organised at one of the hostels in Beijing where many of us were staying as tourists.
