Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Yikes! I would not rely on this article to form a concrete opinion about organic farming practices. I don't see one mention of soil health in the whole piece. It's really an oversimplified hit piece with no nuance whatsoever. Too bad, but that's how our "civilized" culture works - set up...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Thanks for this quote and your open mind....we have to be able to dialogue about this stuff and consider a much bigger picture since the tech is rapidly advancing on so many fronts and the "translation" of the science to the consumer isn't very good. For example, take a look at the 480 "events"...

Bt is used in all methods of farming (over last 100 years) and also on the home gardening scale as well. Here's a brief summary of it's use in GE crops: http://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2015/insecticidal-plants/

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

I would agree that GE glyphosate resistant crops are one factor in the increased herbicide (glyphosate) use since farmers no longer have to be careful to avoid getting the product on the crop itself. There are other factors of course such as Monsanto's patent on glyphosate expiring in 2000...

Although she isn't the most charismatic speaker, this TED talk is a good quick intro to the CRISPR tech: https://www.ted.com/talks/ellen_jorgensen_what_you_need_to_know_about_crispr Also, not CRISPR in this story but gene editing already saving human lives -...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Yes, I think there is a significant difference between this example and most of the GE crop genetic engineering but I wasn't using CRISPR tech as a justification for GE crops - just sharing an example that is considered genetic manipulation but that folks may embrace. I actually think that as...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

We share many of the same thoughts and concerns regarding diabetes, complex system manipulations, etc....I would characterize my own feelings on genetic engineering as ever evolving, meaning that the more I learn, the more I am intrigued and want to learn more. Definitely look more into CRISPR...

Thank you for a great dialogue and offering your sincere feelings on the matter in a respectful way...breath of fresh air to be honest!

Exactly. It appears most here on the thread are focused on GE plants for food rather than GE tech overall.

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Spring has sprung here in CA so I don't have a ton of time to try and be succinct but actually go on a dissertation :) So, I'll have to be brief but please don't take that as dismissive. 1) Epigenetics - I completely agree that scientists should be taking epigenetic factors into account (both...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

My post #79 on page 4 of this thread lists 3 links that I refer to as "pro-GMO"....genetic literacy is one of them. So, you have to read everything on that site with that in mind. It doesn't change the fact that the Ruby Red Grapefruit was created through the process of mutagenesis right? This...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

I absolutely can share specific studies or what I do in my presentations is give more of the important points in the history of genetic research (in this case specifically transgenic research) which highlights some really cool science. But first - tell me honestly and sincerely - have you...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

I know how hard it is to try and explain complex thoughts succinctly and you did a good job! I think everything you say is fair as the entire state of "science" these days is so incredibly head spinning and confusing on so many levels and I totally agree that we mess with shit until it breaks...

Yep...for a real world example if you eat Red Ruby Grapefruit: https://www.geneticliteracyproject.org/2016/06/12/pasta-ruby-grapefruits-why-organic-devotees-love-foods-mutated-by-radiation-and-chemicals/

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

I respect your stance; I think I'd prefer to make judgments based on individual genetic manipulations rather than lumping them all together and saying they all haven't been properly studied. I mean, a GE papaya is quite different than a GE Roundup Ready soybean as far as the genetic...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Look up mutagenesis for a process that preceded genetic engineering but involved inducing mutations and scrambling genes using chemical treatments and blasting with radiation. Many of the fruits and vegetables we eat today were created with this process.

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

I am biased a bit because I live in California so it is extremely easy to avoid genetically engineered food if desired. I also feel that I am in complete control of what I eat and drink - there is no corporate oligarchy shoving food into my mouth. See my comment to Sci about labeling already...

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Just FYI there is labeling that already exists - it's called "USDA ORGANIC" and it's on all Certified Organic products in USA. No genetically engineered products are allowed under the NOP (National Organic Program) that certifies organic farms and products.

Mod+ Discussion - Are Genetically Modified Foods Safe? Should they be labeled?

Dude, I'm just trying to dialogue a bit about the topic and understand where people are coming from and how their beliefs about GE products manifest in real life. Your comment is strange to me because: 1) I never mentioned what I eat and you never asked me about that, 2) my "name" is GRORGANIC...
