Morality/meaning as a social contract is a scam. it's logically inconsistent. "the only philosophical question is suicide" Albert Camus. if I really think life is meaningless then it is impossible for me to bring in a meaning to edicts like " Thou shalt not kill." nitwits like Sam Harris have convinced people that there's an evolutionary survival component to this... but again this is silliness... the logic fails. if the universe is meaningless why does Evolution choose to perpetuate meaninglessness. only God knows the answer
I think Sam Harris is right, Alex. We are all works in progress as we live on this planet. Ideally, after each lifetime we should have become better Souls. that is to say we should have, thanks to our hardships become more sympathetic to the hardships of others. Hopefully we become more capable of compassion and generosity. Hopefully one who sought security in life realizes that greedily amassing yet more at the expense of the less fortunate is a waste of time for his Soul.
Before he died I remember Steven Hawking saying, "The Universe created itself." Is something that is meaningless capable of creating itself? Something composed of so many complex systems all funtioning in synchronicity as this Universe does? I doubt it. A Great and highly intelligent Awareness was responsible for such an accomplishment. And how can we be mere biological robots if we are capable of a diversity of creations of our own thanks to our God given logic? But again, ultimately it remains a question of faith. Do we have the Faith to say we are animated by a tiny spark of the Creator Himself?
