The consensus thus far is that Carrey will portray McKenna in a variation of the experimental documentary “True Hallucinations,” in which McKenna portrayed himself. The documentary is about “the chaos at La Chorrera, the imagination, time, the Logos, belief, hope, madness, and doubt.” Created by Peter Bergmann, the project is intended to be an expansion of ideas which were first shared with the public in “The Transcendental Object At The End of Time.”

Hmmm.

Nothing about McKenna's work for the CIA.
Since the only claims came from misinterpreting Terence's own words, let him answer the question directly. This is for the people who put in insufficient time to figure out such claims but are fast to burp them out onto message boards, -as most intelligent people don't need proof anyway to dismiss such nonsense - and a response to the loud noises of one particular person on the web, you know who you are.

Only those lacking in any sense of humour, and of an obtusely literal and paranoid frame of mind, could put any interpretation on the Esalen clip other than that Terence is talking about being recruited first in "deep background positions" later in "public relations" by the alien intelligence behind the mushrooms. There is no justification whatsoever in blowing this up into a huge conspiratorial farrago aimed at discrediting one of the greatest liberation thinkers of the past hundred years.

Mind you, I could come up with an alternative conspiracy theory. Terence McKenna's disembodied voice living on on the internet has become such a powerful force for free thinking, such an effective instrument for de-conditioning and liberating those brainwashed by "the system" that "the system" has responded with this viral disinformation campaign to discredit him through rumours that he was an agent of the system itself. What more effective way could be imagined to neutralise the force and the power and the light that is Terence? I can only hope that those who've been reached by his message will see through the nonsense and continue to honour Terence's name and learn the vital lessons he has to teach.

Charlie, go find COINTELPRO archives on the Web - many of the mid-20th century FBI documents are declassified and now available for free. It is quite clear from them that FBI types, as well as any other state-approved violent scoundrels, hated and feared couter-cultural and subversive movements of 1950s - 1960s - 1970s, seeing them as the pawns of a demonic global anti-American Communist conspiracy and employing the dirtiest and ugliest methods possible to discredit, disrupt and destroy them. So, there definitely were real conspiracies - conspiracies of the powerful cliques against the population, especially against the disobedient and rebellious elements of the population. But the potential revolutionaries from the Libertarian Left / Social Anarchist / Free Spirituality movements were not participants of these conspiracies - they were the targets of repression enacted by the conspirators.
