A lot of Marxism-inspired materialists were "dialectical materialists" - this is, they embraced an overtly non-classical (in some sense, even anti-classical) logic that more than just accepts contradiction - it is based on working with it, by fusing the contradictory pairs (a famous "thesis - antithesis - synthesis" trinity). In the USSR, "dialectical materialism" was compulsory - any other philosophy was a thought-crime.

There were also irrationalist materialists, such as Paul Feyerabend, who rejected logic and reason altogether.

Thanks, Vortex. More excellent food for thought. I've always been hazy on the dialectic and on dialectical materialism. I will have to do some reading on that.Same with Paul Feyerabend.

All that said, I do like the idea that it's possible for people to think and act in contradictory ways. For me, the idea that people contradict themselves makes me wonder in what other ways the universe might contradict itself.
