Mod+ WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FORUM

IMO, it's nasty because it's permanent. Every additional dislike just accumulates in the dislike tally for a person's profile and stigmatises the recipient: it's the intellectual equivalent of a brand or a tattoo. If it didn't accumulate in this way, I'd have no problem with it. It's not exactly like a thumbs down rating, which on most blogs only relates to specific posts and you don't know just by looking at someone's avatar that they might have received many negative ratings in the past. Much as I often disagree with Linda, I've never given her (or anyone else) a dislike rating. In the worst case, I've given people a disagree rating, because I know that doesn't accumulate and therefore doesn't stigmatise.

I say this with all due respect and in the honest spirit of inquiry: Why did you take the dislikes so personally? And what about the "permanence" of them was so galling? I am truly just curious about your personal experience of the rating scale that used to be under our avatars.

I took a couple personally because they were meant personally by people who couldn't argue their case and so resorted to needling. That goes double because the people in question knew very well that though I disliked their posts every bit as much as they did mine, I always refrained from the use of the dislike button myself. I've better things to do than come to a forum where people engage in behaviour like that. It's not worth the aggro.

Understood. Thanks for replying.

Is it only me or the "Watch Thread" link at the top right of a discussion isn't working? Any time I click the link inside any discussion it just hangs there for a long time doing nothing. I refreshed the page and tried with several threads, no joy.

Do you get the same?

Yes, same for me.

Alex,

Like everyone, I am extremely pleased at how stable the forum has become. However, as the information on this forum builds up again, I would still like to know just how often the forum is backed up, and exactly how many distinct backups are available at any one time (if you always overwrite the previous one, there is a possibility you will end up losing the lot). Also, do you have some of those backups personally stored on disk (or DVD) - as opposed to simply relying on the 'cloud' or your website hosting company.

I think if you did that, it would put a lot of people's minds at rest.

David
