I think that the Skeptiko community operates, largely, out of curiosity. Often, people say that curiosity kills the cat. Well, that would be a 9 fold killing, right? - For the uninitiated, cats supposedly have 9 lives. I believe that curiosity, even though at times killing things, also feeds snakes. That being said, snake owners, please don't feed cats to your pythons. If a cat has 9 lives, then you are going to have to clean up at least 9 times the shit after your snake eats that cat.

All jokes aside, I think the Skeptiko community operates not only out of curiosity, but relentless discovery. I believe it is at the forefront of a new paradigm; - one that perhaps existed millennia ago, but is returning. Essentially, it is the renaissance without a dogmatism.

Be careful of hubris Shane; its a dangerous thing. There are lots of smart people here but painting Skeptiko as being on the forefront of a new, non-dogmatic renaissance age is quite a leap. A little humility wouldn't kill anyone. ;)

Fuck the humility, just be yourself. A little more humility and we will all be wearing masks again. If a non-dogmantic renaissance age causes quite a leap, then lets get on the trampoline. A little humility won't kill anyone?!?! - Sounds like an advertisement for vaccinations!

I'm still trying to process steven greer on stage with richard doty. I don't believe a lot of things colonel john alexander has said but I do agree with them when he said that richard doty should be in leavenworth prison if he really did the massively illegal things he has claimed to do as a counterintelligence agent.

1:29:15
fair enough as long as we're going through a list of things to clarify misinformation disinformation Paul
1:29:23
bennewitz people associated with projects to distort or mind-control
1:29:29
folks any knowledge of that at any time any awareness of those programs running
1:29:37
no no the individuals involved my position on that is if they did what
1:29:45
they said they did they belong in jail absolutely illegal activities that as
1:29:52
they are described would have no tolerance for them or you know should it
1:29:59
be tolerated

I have trouble squaring the circle on everything people say about UFO's.
I would really like you (Alex) to chat with him, and I'm sure you've tried.
I wonder if he doesn't take to people who would challenge him as you would. Which is a shame, because I would push back on a lot of the things he has to say as well.

I'm not sure that works... at least not for me personally. it's kind of like damien echols... if he wanted to come on skeptiko I would welcome the opportunity but I'm not going to track him down. the evidence is pretty overwhelming that he raped and killed those three kids... so what are you ask a guy like that?

kind of similar with richard doty... what he did was terrible... goes against everything we're supposed to be about. then again, there's a lot of terrible things happening in the world.

Not sure where to post this, so I'll just stick it HERE.
TWICE, I guess.
Just started it. Somewhat tedious. Someone shared on Forum Borealis.

Do we even NEED fossil fuels?
I like Jon Stewart generally, but be wary of propping up his interviews as evidence for anything.

I watched a fair bit of the modern monetary theory video you linked previously. It was wholly lacking on countervailing views from the two guests. Its just hard to take anything from these videos when a skeptical technician isn't present to push back on whatever the guest is promoting.

I have trouble with the argument that you need to show both sides of an issue in every discussion. I think that's an error that we've fallen into because we- as a society- are in love with the contest of point/counter point.
I'm happy to see someone come and argue their position solely (as happens constantly on Skeptiko) and we can challenge the veracity of their statements here with evidence.
I don't provide Stewart's interviews as evidence themselves- any more I would argue that Skeptiko's guests are solely "evidence". They are someone's perspective. Whether they come from an educated one or not, is what's at stake in my opinion.

I don't think you need to show both sides of arguments when you are listening as an informed, somewhat technically proficient person. Modern Monetary Theory, like much of economics, is highly technical. I work in the investment management industry and don't trust myself to evaluate macro economic theory. Hence, I like to hear critiques of positions from countervailing vantage points. Helps me to evaluate.

YMMV.

This particular video is a response to a previous video of Jon Stewarts with someone providing the opinion of the Fed.
So the complexity is in the combination of the conversations :)

We had both Alexander and Doty on The Paracast. Both are masters of disinformation.

Chevron proves conclusively that no one can trust private industry to protect people, the environment, rights or justice.
The ONLY way forward is demand a government that is reflective of its populace and kept from corruption

And interesting look at the value of having socialized medicine in a nation.
1. You don't have any medical bankruptcies
2. You don't have your citizenry wait to see a doctor "when they can afford it"
3. Your medical costs are less with the same outcomes (because you don't have to pay extortion rates to a middleman)
4. Doctor doesn't need to check with your insurance agency to see if the treatment best for you is covered
5. No such thing as "out of network".
