It would seem that Microsoft also sold digital books for a while, and now intends to get out of that business:

This reveals the fact that books that you bought simply become unavailable if the supplier ceases to trade! Obviously Microsoft isn't ceasing to trade, so it is offering a refund for all purchased books, but as that link points out, this potential problem extends to all books encrypted by Digital Rights Management.
To my surprise, it would seem from the above that there is a way of removing Amazon DRM from books you 'own' - so it may be worth reading this to protect your property.

Obviously I am not suggesting anyone should use this to distribute a book they purchased from Amazon, but simply to be able to protect it.
